Skid Row shooting: Homeless man shot by the LAPD stole his identity and was a bank robber

Charley Saturmin Robinet, the homeless man killed by the LAPD on Sunday, had a stolen French identity and was previously convicted for a bank robbery in 2000. Robinet was wanted by LAPD for a probation violation prior to his death.

Charley Saturmin Robinet, 39, was part of a gang that robbed a Wells Fargo bank in Thousand Oaks in 2000. After the robbery, Robinet and another man led the LAPD on a chase through Ventura County before their vehicle ran over a spike strip. Robinet was caught with $33,500 on him, money Robinet said he need to support his acting classes at the Beverly Hills Playhouse.

Then identifying as a French national, Robinet was convicted of conspiracy, bank robbery and for brandishing a firearm at a bank employee. He then served 15 years in federal prison. According to online federal records, Robinet was released from federal prison in May 2014. Robinet has been wanted for a probation violation for several months after failing to report to his probation officer for three months.

An hour before he was killed last Sunday, security cameras on Skid Row showed Robinet dealing drugs and getting into a fight with his neighbor.

Officials now say that Robinet stole the identity of a Frenchman 15 years ago when he came to the U.S to pursue an acting career. His real identity and origin is still unknown, although Robinet went by the name of "Africa" or "Cameroon" while on the streets.
