Ferguson police shootings: 20-yr-old Missouri man arrested in shooting of 2 St. Louis County cops

A 20-year-old Missouri man was charged Sunday with shooting two St. Louis County police officers during a protest outside the police headquarters in Ferguson last Thursday.

Jeffrey L. Williams was arrested late Saturday and is charged with two counts of assault in the first degree, three counts of armed criminal action and firing a weapon from a vehicle, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch said.

Authorities said Jeffrey L. Williams claimed that he was aiming for someone else and shot the police by accident from inside a car. Police are investigating the claim.

A .40-caliber handgun was found at Williams’ residence that had shell casings that matched the ones recovered at the scene of the shooting. Authorities searched the home after getting a warrant based on information received from the public.

The two officers were shot Thursday night standing shoulder to shoulder in front of the police station after midnight as demonstrators gathered outside following the police chief’s resignation. A 41-year-old county officer was shot in the right shoulder, while a 32-year-old suburban officer was hit in the right cheek.

At least three gunshots came from a distance behind the demonstrations, as much as 125 yards away, authorities said.

Williams claimed he was a demonstrator and had taken part in previous demonstrations, but protest leaders were quick to deny Williams’ participation.

Williams is currently being held on a $300,000 cash bond.
