David Bird missing: reporter’s remains found in New Jersey river a year after disappearance

Human remains pulled from the Passaic River in New Jersey this week have been positively identified on Thursday as that of Wall Street Journal reporter David Bird, who had been missing for over a year.

Bird was last seen wearing a red jacket with yellow zippers, blue jeans and sneakers while out walking in the woods near his home in January of 2014, officials said. He also reportedly did not take his cellphone or pills he needed to take twice a day to make sure his body did not reject the new liver he had recently received during transplant surgery.

When he failed to return home, a large search party was organized, but he was not found. His disappearance resulted in the creation of a web page — www.finddavidbird.info — which was aimed at locating him.

His remains were discovered after two men canoeing on the Passaic River earlier this week noticed a red jacket caught in some branches and notified the police. Authorities were able to identify the remains using dental records.

However, officials still do not know how and when the reporter died, or whether foul play was involved.
