UVA Rolling Stone scandal: police find no evidence of gang rape described in Sabrina Erdely article

Charlottesville police said that they found no evidence that a female student was gang raped at a University of Virginia fraternity house in 2012 and that they are suspending the investigation, after the accuser refused to cooperate. Officials added that the case is not closed.
“I can’t prove that something didn’t happen, and there may come a point in time in which this survivor, or this complaining party or someone else, may come forward with some information that might help us move this investigation further,” Police Chief Timothy Longo told reporters.
The announcement comes four months after a now-discredited Rolling Stone article by Sabrina Rubin Erdely about an alleged gang rape at UVA caused outrage across the country.
Jackie told Rolling Stone that on the night of Sept. 28, 2012, she was on a date that ended up at her date’s frat house, Phi Kappa Psi, for a party.
Her date, “Drew” in the article, then led her upstairs where she is locked in a room and then gang raped for three hours by several frat brothers for an initiation ritual.
Within days of the article being published, Rolling Stone admitted to major flaws in the piece.
Longo did say that his officers believe that something did happen to Jackie, just not what the Rolling Stone reported.
The investigation included an examination of records and interviews with people linked to the case, including UVA officials, Phi Kappa Psi members and another frat house, two of Jackie’s best friends and others.
Police were unable to locate the guy Rolling Stone called “Drew,” who was supposedly Jackie’s date the night of the gang rape. Police were also unable to determine whether the fraternity brother who allegedly masterminded the assault, Haven Monahan, ever existed.
Police also said a time-stamped picture of the frat house on the night of the rape shows an empty entrance.
“We weren’t able to support that a party was taking place,” Longo said.
Since being caught with their pants down, Rolling Stone has commissioned a team of investigators to examine the report. Managing editor, Will Dana, said Sunday that the external review would be out “in the next couple of weeks.”
Phi Kappa Psi said it is “exploring its legal options to address the extensive damage caused by Rolling Stone.”
