Artist Choi Sun's solo exhibition "Meari" was held at the SongEun ArtSpace. Using shockingly unorthodox materials such as spit, breath, dog hair and waste oil, Choi asks the audience "Do these work still look beautiful after discovering what they are made of?" The piece "Meari," made of the burned hair of dogs, cats and humans, is inspired by both the visual and olfactory aspects of his childhood memories of watching the men in his town killing dogs. "Spitting Salvia" was created with spit and the piece depicts human emotions with the transparent paint 'spit,' while "Butterflies" was made by the citizens and foreign workers blowing paint in a rural city at one marketplace. Choi's pieces, at first, seem to be ordinary abstract paintings, however, the used materials are not ordinary at all, asking the true meaning and value of modern art saying, "What is art?"

"Byeolshingut on the East Coast" is a village ritual on the eastern coastal regions of Korea. Designated as Important Intangible Cultural Asset No.82-1, the ritual displays the earnestness of fishermen wishing for safety as they constantly teeter on the boundary of life and death. Puneri rhythm, with the literal meaning of 'disentanglement,' is composed of 16 bars. It serves as the basic rhythm in "Byeolshingut on the East Coast." Because the rhythm has neither a start nor an end, it serves as a metaphor for our lives as we cannot predict what is ahead of us. 1.5 is between 1 and 2. As the title implies, "Puneri 1.5," the piece talks about things in the middle ? things in between life and death or the past and the future. Also, the dancers performing with 3m long sticks on their heads display the uncertain, fragile life, while 'Heoteun Dance,' which is nonsense dance performed solely for one's personal enjoyment without any rules or forms, tells that all lives are different. The piece deals with various unconventional elements, however, it still offers comfort to modern-day people that lead tough lives.

Sweet flowers burst into bloom
Sugarcraft artist Chun Yung-pil gained recognition for his skills in the U.K. where sugarcraft art originate in. He then became Korea's representative sugarcraft artist by excelling at various international competitions. Sugar flowers require extreme attention to detail. Chun personally collects and observes flowers and leaves to express authenticity. He also works with Korea's native flowers to further introduce the beauty of Korean flowers and plants to the world. In addition, because sugar acts as a preservative, sugar flowers do not decay, therefore, they make perfect interior props. Chun proves that the world of sweetness is infinite. With his wit and skill, he establishes his own world of artistry through the medium of sugar.

송은 아트 스페이스에서 최선 작가의 개인전 '메아리'가 열렸다. 기존의 현대미술 전시에서 볼 수 없었던 침, 숨, 개털, 폐유 같은 소재를 사용해 파격적인 작품으로 탄생시켰다. 작품 '메아리'는 작가의 어린 시절 동네 아저씨들이 개를 학대하는 장면을 시각적, 후각적 기억을 떠올린 작업으로 개와 고양이, 사람의 털을 태운 재로 전시장 벽면 전체를 칠했다. 작가는 관객들에게 '재료를 알고 난 뒤에도 과연 아름다운가?' 라는 질문을 던진다. 캔버스에 침을 뱉어 말려 완성한 작품 '쓴 침'에서는 투명한 물감인 침을 통해 인간의 감정을 담았다. 안산 시장을 오가는 시민들과 외국인 노동자들이 함께 물감을 불어 완성한 작품 '나비'까지 작가 최선의 작품은 일반적인 추상화처럼 보이지만 그 과정과 재료는 일반적이지 않다. 최선 작가의 작품들은 특징이 없는 비슷한 그림을 따라가는 현실에 쓴소리를 던진다. 무엇이 예술인가? 예술작품의 진정한 의미와 가치를 묻는다.

동해안 어촌 일대에서 전통을 이어오고 있는 중요 무형문화재 '동해안 별신굿'
예측할 수 없는 자연의 변화에 어민들의 무사 안녕을 기원했던 굿을, 현대적인 움직임이 담긴 한국 무용으로 풀어냈다. 동해안 별신굿의 가장 기본이 되는 16박 리듬의 '푸너리장단'은 시작과 끝이 없어 한 치 앞을 볼 수 없는 우리의 인생을 표현한다. 제목 속의 1.5는 1과 2의 중간 수, 결국 삶과 죽음이나 과거와 미래의 중간을 의미한다. 3m 길이의 붉은 막대기를 머리 위에 올린 무용수들의 움직임은 불안하고 위태로운 삶을 표현하고, 형식이나 정해진 순서 없이 즉흥연주에 맞춰 추는 '허튼춤'은 저마다의 인생을 자신만의 춤으로 풀어낸다. 현대인들에게는 생소할 수 있는 민속의 춤 푸너리가 삶의 아픔을 위로한다.

달콤한 꽃이 피다, 설탕 꽃
설탕을 재료로 만들어 달콤함이 살아있는 슈가 플라워. 생생한 색감의 꽃잎과 잎사귀를 그대로 재현한 슈가플라워는 생화 못지않은 정교함으로 눈길을 사로잡는다. 손끝에서 아름다운 꽃을 만들어내는 슈가크래프터 천융필은 설탕 공예의 종주국이라고 알려진 영국에서 이미 실력을 인정받았다. 계절마다 피는 꽃을 직접 관찰하고, 꽃잎 한 장씩 손으로 만드는 섬세한 작업과정이 기본 바탕이다. 세계에 잘 알려지지 않은 우리나라 토중 꽃을 소개하려는 그의 노력이 하나의 작품으로 탄생한다. 천연방부제인 설탕으로 만들었기에 오랫동안 보존이 가능하고 의미도 전하는 슈가플라워로 독창적인 세계를 만들어간다.
