China bans African ivory imports for a year

Demand for ivory from China has sparked a booming trade in smuggled ivory that is driving the unsustainable killing of elephants in Africa.

In an effort to protect the animals, China has imposed a one-year ban on imports on African ivory carvings.

Britian's Prince William, who is on an official visit to China, will address the ivory trade issue on Wednesday while at an elephant rehabilitation centre in Yunnan Province.

Al Jazeera's Adrian Brown reports from Beijing.
