During an oil spill, many birds such as penguins can be impacted by the toxic mess.

109-year-old Alfred or Alfie Date, who is thought to be the oldest man in Australia, has been busy knitting sweaters for cute little penguins in the event of an oil spill.

It started when the Penguin Foundation, which protects the little inhabitants of Phillip Island near Melbourne, ran a competition in 2014 asking entrants to knit a unique jumper to raise awareness for the penguins. The competition and a story about an elderly knitter went viral prompting folks to send in many more sweaters.

Individuals from all over the place responded, including Alfie. Nurses at the elderly care home in which he lives brought him some heavy wool and he starting creating the garments for the penguins.
