Organic Milk Shortages Affect Grocery Stores

Many grocery stores are being affected by a shortage in organic milk, which has been caused by a surge in demand coupled with high standards for organic production.

Organic milk supplies are running low to the point where many grocery stores are unable to keep the product in stock.

Part of the reason is a surge in demand from more educated consumers who believe organic milk is healthier due to its lack of added hormones and antibiotics.

According to standards set by the U.S. government, milk labeled “organic” must be sourced from hormone and antibiotic-free cows that graze on and consume organic materials which are free of genetic modifications and certain chemical pesticides.

Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that organic milk sales grew by 9.5 percent in the first 11 months of 2014 compared to demand for regular milk which dropped 3.8 percent in the same period but nevertheless represents about 95 percent of the market.
