Australian police charge two over terror offences

Australian anti-terror police have outlined details of a planned terrorist attack in Sydney linked to the militant Islamic State. Two men, who were not known to the police are being detained after a raid in the city suburbs. They have been charged with planning a terrorist attack.
“This is indicative of the threat that we now have to live with and which we’re now having to deal with. The type of act that we will allege that was going to be undertaken is consistent with the messaging coming out of IS,” said New South Wales Deputy Police Commissioner Catherine Burn.
In December two hostages were killed after a siege at a cafe in Sydney.
The gunman, who sought to align himself with the Islamic State group also died after police stormed the building.
Australia, which raised its domestic terror alert last year joined the US-led military action against the Islamic State in Iraq in October. Prime Minister Tony Abbot has said ISIL is a “death cult” that must be stopped.
