Okay picture this an alien that resembles an octopus with a smiley face for a head comes down to Earth to blow it up after destroying the moon. Completely unstoppable the alien decides to teach a class for a year, giving the students that time to try and assassinate him even though no one else has managed too. The alien also has a range of super-powers like the ability to dodge bullets at mach 20 speeds. This is the premise for assassination classroom.

Props to this anime for having such an original premise and then setting it in the most over-used location in anime; the classroom. The antagonist really steals the show here, he reminds me of the waif loving evil robot from Hyperdimension Neptunia the anime with his sociopathic sense of humour and bizarre sense of self. The same can’t quite be said for the students. At least not in the first episode.

They are just there to react to the antagonists every whim with no back story or motivations of their own besides the obvious. Still even if the students remain this 2 dimensional throughout it would probably still be compelling enough given the charisma and unique design of the antagonist. He can switch between being caring and ominous almost instantly and this is put to great use for the pacing.

What also helps to make this anime stand out is the visuals. They are glorious, from the effects of the antagonist, to the vivid colours, and naturalistic lighting. The thick black outlines also really make the characters pop against the backgrounds. Not to mention a lot of attention has been played too the shadows

The soundtrack is rather cinematic but manages to balance the unusual tone pretty well. It has equal focus on drama and levity which is important given the absurdity of the concept. It also has a terrific range from from horror, to rock, to the highly cheesy j-pop intro. With all that in mind onto the ratings.

Characters I rate 6 out of 8 I suspect the students will become more fleshed out over time and the antagonist is completely captivating throughout.
Story I rate 6 out of 8 a pretty unique concept in a rather cliche’ setting.
Sound I rate 5 out 8 it doesn’t leave a lasting impression but it does set every scene uniquely.
Art I rate 7 out of 8. Obviously this is personal taste but this is the best looking anime I’ve seen so far this year which probably isn’t saying a lot since it’s still January.
Even so I rate this a 6 out of 8. Definitely worth a watch.
