Ray Barretto - Vale Mas Un Guaguanco

Born April 29, 1929 in New York, Barretto dabbled in music inspired by legendary percussionist Chano Pozo. Son of Puerto Rican parents, young Ray began playing sessions download ("jam sessions") held in the jazz clubs during his stay in Germany in the years that met the mandatory military service. On returning to civilian life, Ray continued to play in New York until he got his first job in the Latin Jazz Combo Eddie Bonnemere. Two years later he joined the group of José Curbelo, from where he went to replace Mongo Santamaria in Tito Puente Orchestra. Barreto remained with the orchestra's timpanist for four years, during which also appeared as a session musician on recordings of the genre "rhythm & blues" recordings of Red Garland, Gene Ammons and, briefly, Herbie Mann.

In 1961, the record label Riverside decided to enter the market of Latin music. Signing Barretto, the young Puerto Rican started this cycle forming a charanga orchestra. "Pachanga With Barreto" was the first of two albums that Ray recorded with them. But with the failure of the experiment, the conga changed company to start a new musical strategy.
