The latest visuals confirm that the lander did indeed make a successful landing on the surface of MARS, but for some reason did not deploy properly.

For more than 11 years, the mystery of what happened to the Beagle 2 left experts searching for answers. The last known signal from the lander indicated that it detached from the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter without problems.

Beagle 2 was supposed to head to a large basin situated near Mars’ equator and release another signal to announce its arrival but that signal was not received. For Mark Sims, the mission manager of the Beagle 2, the latest images are a relief and provide some overdue closure.
