Charlie Hebdo France marches: 3.7 million plus march for freedom, minus the US

After 17 people died during three days of deadly terrorist attacks in Paris last week, more than three million people took part in unity marches across France in support of freedom of expression. Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama was sleeping in the White House.

In Paris, 1.6 million souls from all walks of life took to the streets to show solidarity after the attacks on Charlie Hebdo, the police and a kosher supermarket in the biggest march in France ever on record.

The Paris march was divided into two routes due to safety concerns. The march began at the Place de la Republique and ended at the Place de la Nation.

Many other cities across France also held rallies. Officials said at least 3.7 million people showed up to participate in the marches. Large rallies also occurred outside of France in London, Washington, Montreal and Berlin.

More than 40 world leaders joined the Paris march, although rather ironically many of them don’t have the best record when it comes to supporting a free press. The U.S., did not send a top level official. Ambassador Jane Hartley was the highest-ranking American government official to attend the rally.

But the march wasn’t about the politicians, it was about the people and the pen. In the face of terror or fear, the pen will always be mightier than the sword. We are all Charlie.
