US crew evacuated to Russian segment of International Space Station

Fears that a possible ammonia leak had been detected on board the International Space Station may turn out to have been a false alarm.

Russian’s Mission Control Centre said there had been a leak of “harmful substances”. It happened in the US segment of the craft.

The crew were evacuated to join their fellow astronauts in the Russian side.

The alarm was raised after a Space X Dragon capsule wrapped up its two-day journey to dock with the station. Its return to earth may have to be delayed. Mission control in Houston radioed the US crew to say that the initial reading of a potential leak was looking like a “false indication.”

“The crew are safe and in good shape in the Russian segment of the International Space Station”, NASA said in a statement.
