Welcome to anime impressions the show where I watch the first episode of a new or ongoing anime and tell you wether in my honest opinion wether it’s worth watching or not and then YouTube flags me for copyright and then I have to upload to dailymotion.
But seriously I will be mirroring anything that might get flagged over at dailymotion.com/extramana
Alright onto the first anime: If you’ve ever seen John Carpenter’s movie the thing or the godawful remake you may be familiar with the concept of an alien invading a host’s body, and taking it over in order to appear human. Parasyte takes this concept but mixes in slice of life drama with the horror. It’s also the only anime I’ve ever watched that has dubstep in the soundtrack. To make matters the worse it has a cheesy techno pop intro soundtrack that doesn’t juxtapose very well against people’s heads being eaten. You’re gonna have to take my word on this because YouTube is probably already flagging me right now without including the intro.
There is something truly horrific about seeing a guys alien hand fight an alien dog just as the bass drops on a skillrex knockoff track plays.
I suppose I should go into the concept of this anime in a little more detail. You see the aliens are in fact parasites and one of them happens to try to take over our protagonist. Our protagonist is a totally generic shy schoolboy who has is a bit of a nerd because he wears glasses. It’s not written well is what I’m getting at. The parasitic alien tries taking over his whole body but only manages to get his right hand and in doing so forms a pact with the boy. Where the boy gets to keep his right hand and the alien gets a host. Obvious masturbation jokes aside this premise is what I would call meh. Let’s see if it holds out for an entire season.
The art style of the anime is in my opinion rather run-of the mill with the lighting and shadowing doing little to help set the tone, which is ya’know kinda important in a horror show. The aliens are a little under-detailed and their design is passable but could have been a lot more striking since they are a key feature of the show after all.
Now it’s time for the arbitrary ratings. Naturally everything is going be rated out of 8
Characters I rate it 3 out of 8, you know something is wrong when the most human character is the killer alien parasite.
Story I rate 3 out of 8. It’s nothing spectacular.
Sound I rate 2 out of 8. The dubstep is truly horrific.
Art I rate 4 out of 8. It’s pretty meh.
Final score 3 out 8.
