CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Surveillance video shows the moment an Erlanger police officer accidentally shot himself in an Over-the-Rhine elevator.
The video is from inside the elevator in the Mercer Commons parking garage from January 3.
Erlanger Police said in a release that Officer Darryl Jouett adjusted his service weapon which was in his holster when the gun fired. The video shows Officer Jouette remove the gun from the holster and then appear to put the weapon in his coat pocket when it then fired.
The bullet ricocheted and hit Jouett in the stomach. His wife was in the elevator with him at the time but wasn't hurt. Jouett is expected to recover.
He's been with Erlanger police for 25 years.

CINCINNATI — Authorities say an off-duty police officer out to dinner with his wife in Cincinnati accidentally shot himself in the stomach inside a parking garage elevator.
Cincinnati police say Officer Darryl Jouett of the Erlanger, Kentucky, Police Department was headed back to his car on Saturday night when he tried to adjust his department-issued weapon in his holster, and it discharged.
Police tell WCPO-TV that the bullet ricocheted off the elevator walls and struck him.
Jouett was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with injuries that weren't life-threatening.
The veteran officer has spent more than 25 years at the police department in Erlanger.
Capt. Mike John with the Cincinnati Police Department calls the situation "very unusual."

(WCPO) CINCINNATI -- An off-duty police officer from Erlanger, Kentucky was accidentally shot in Over-the-Rhine on Saturday when his weapon discharged in an elevator.

The incident happened about 8:30 p.m. at the Mercer Commons Parking Garage near the intersection of Vine and Mercer streets.

Erlanger police officer Darryl Jouett had just had dinner and was heading back to his car with his wife when his duty-issue .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun discharged inside the elevator. The bullet ricocheted off the wall and struck him in the stomach, according to Capt. Mike John, District 1 Commander for the Cincinnati Police Department.
John said Jouett was conscious and alert when medics transported him to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment. The injuries were non-life-threatening.
"It's very unusual. Obviously you have somebody that's used to handling firearms," John said. "It's very unusual to see somebody discharge a firearm, accidentally, in a confined space like that. It's very unusual."

The next day, Erlanger police said Jouett went to adjust his belt when the service weapon fired in its holster. It's unclear if he had the safety on.

The video hasn't been made available.

Jouett has more than 25 years of law enforcement experience with the Erlanger department.
