Grand Canyon Becomes Winter Wonderland After Rare Snow

A winter storm in Arizona resulted in snowfall over Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park. The snow started coming down on New Year’s Eve and continued falling into the next day.

Snow in the American Southwest is not a common sight. A recent storm left Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park coated in a beautiful layer enhancing its natural beauty.

The snow started coming down on New Year’s Eve and continued falling into the next day. The white substance covered the canyon’s South Rim in a gorgeous blanket of snow; something that is very rarely seen.

The National Park Service shared photos of the unusual sight and referred to it as a “winter wonderland”. Aside from the appealing visual aspect, however, the snow created some problems.

Flagstaff, Arizona got about a foot and a half of snow while Phoenix received only a slight dusting. (1,last)

The overhead view of the canyon revealed white covered peaks and ridges. The result was a highly contrasting view; far different than the rust-colored rock so commonly witnessed.

The park roads were also coated in snow and heavy equipment was required to assist in the cleanup efforts to eliminate any possible danger from the slippery surfaces.
