More than 120 Pakistanis, mostly children, killed in Taliban high school attack

At least 126 people were killed, most of them just children, after Taliban gunmen stormed a school run by the military.

Hundreds of students were taken hostage ... in the bloodiest insurgent attack in Pakistan in years.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) UNIDENTIFIED STUDENT SAYING:

"As soon as the firing started, our teacher made us sit in a corner and told us to lower our heads. After around an hour, when the firing subsided a little, army personnel came and rescued us. When we came out we saw in the corridors, our friends who had been shot three or four times, some dead and some injured. Their blood had spilt all over the place."

The Taliban released a statement saying they chose to attack the school because government forces were targeting their women and families.

Hours into the siege, an operation was still underway to rescue children trapped inside.
