Germans are mourning the death of a 23-year-old student named Tugce Albayrak. She was murdered after heroically intervening in a situation where two teenage girls were being harassed by a number of men.

Following the incident on November 15th, one of the men attacked Albayrak in the parking lot of a McDonald’s restaurant in Offenbach.

It's believed a stone or a bat was used to strike her head. She fell backwards, and her landing caused severe brain injury.

Albayrak fell into a coma, which lasted two weeks before life support was removed this past Friday.

Her parents made the difficult decision on her 23rd birthday, after medical officials said Albayrak was brain-dead and would never regain consciousness.

The 18-year-old alleged attacker is in police custody. In light of her tragic passing, Germany's president, Joachim Gauck is mulling over the decision to award a posthumous medal to Albayrak.

Gauck wrote to her family and noted “Tugce has earned gratitude and respect from us all… Where other people looked the other way, Tugce showed exemplary courage and moral fortitude.”
