Hong Kong protesters clash with police near financial district

Hong Kong police push back pro-democracy activists after an attempt to encircle government headquarters.

Hundreds of demonstrators hold umbrellas in the air -- a symbol of their pro-democracy movement -- to protect themselves from pepper spray.

Defying orders to retreat after more than two months of demonstrations, protesters made their way to the city's Admiralty neighborhood, near the financial district.

Demonstrators say they're against Beijing's plans to pre-screen candidates for Hong Kong elections, and want free elections for the city in 2017.

This latest flare-up comes after four nights of unrest in the city's Mong Kok district, one of the city's largest and most volatile protest sites, which police had tried to clear.
