Okapis are beautiful, rare creatures that are the only living relative of giraffes.

One was recently born at the Houston Zoo and he’s nothing short of adorable. The male okapi greeted the world on November 6th and weighed 40 pounds at birth.

The calf doesn’t yet have a name but that doesn’t seem to matter in the least bit to him. He is perfectly happy being cared for by his mother and bonding with her.

Okapis are native to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa. With black and white stripes on their hindquarters and front legs, they bear a resemblance to a zebra, but their heads are nearly identical to those of giraffes.

The creatures were first discovered about 100 years ago in the wild. Last year, the species was listed as endangered due to poaching and habitat destruction.

As for the latest calf at the Houston Zoo, he is the very first one to be born at the facility.
