Welcoming a newborn into the world should be a joyous time for families. Relatives of one woman in Colorado, however, are dealing with mixed emotions after she decided to save her baby’s life over her own.

Welcoming a newborn into the world should be a joyous time for families. Relatives of one woman in Colorado, however, are dealing with mixed emotions after she decided to save her baby’s life over her own.

34-year-old Karisa Bugal went into labor on November 3rd and that’s when doctors discovered that she had a rare condition; Amniotic Fluid Embolism, which can often be fatal.

It results in the shutdown of the mother’s organs. Karisa was rushed to the delivery room with 2 choices, an emergency c-section under anesthesia, or one where she would remain awake, but doctors were well aware that could be fatal to her son, Declan.

Karisa made the decision to go under right away, as Declan’s heart rate was beginning to drop. That was the best choice to save her son’s life but it was the worst regarding her own.

Her doctor explained “Her other option would have been to decline that and stay awake for her surgery, but by the time we would have put in a spine or something, it’s possible that Declan would not have made it.”

Shortly after the 7-pound, 4-ounce newborn greeted the world on November 4th, Karisa passed away. Karisa’s husband Wes, is now living with two conflicting emotions.

On one hand, he has the grief of losing his wife and on the other, he has the joys of raising not only their new son, but their older daughter, Mallory.

A GoFundMe page has been launched to help the family.
