Shells strike village in eastern Ukraine - residents

With the sun up in eastern Ukraine, residents get their first look at the aftermath of shelling from Saturday evening.

As the Donetsk residents begin digging up the wreckage and clearing out the distorted debris, the home's owner recounts the horror that wounded his wife.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) LOCAL RESIDENT, IVAN, SAYING:

"At this time there was the sound of a strong explosion, the lights went off right away, my wife started screaming and moaning loudly, my granddaughter started crying. It was dark, I fumbled for some time to find the flashlights to turn them on."

Blood stains remain on the floor, where he had given his wife first aid.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) LOCAL RESIDENT, IVAN, SAYING:

"We did what we could for my wife... a tourniquet or something... because she was bleeding very heavily. We bound her (wound) with a bed sheet as we had no tourniquet."

She remains in serious condition at a nearby hospital.
