A vigil has been held in Indianapolis, in the US state of Indiana, for the aid worker Peter Kassig who was beheaded in Syia.

Kassig’s parents were among the mourners attending the vigil for their son, a medic and former US Army Ranger.

Ed and Paula Kassig said they were proud of their son who was deeply committed to his humanitarian work.

His murder at the hands of the group calling itself Islamic State (ISIL) had been confirmed by the White House.

US President Barack Obama has condemned the killing as “pure evil.”

The 26-year-old had founded an aid group to help Syrians caught in their country’s brutal civil war.

Kassig changed his name to Abdul Rahman when he converted to Islam after being taken hostage.

He was the fifth Westerner the extremist group claims to have beheaded.
