Indian police suspect antibiotic tablets produced at this factory may be linked to the deaths of at least 12 women who went to a nearby sterilisation camp.

Preliminary test results show they contain a chemical found in rat poison.

(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE, RAIPUR, G.P. SINGH, SAYING:

"During the sterilisation drive, all the medicines that were used, and one by the name of Ciprocin, were supplied by Mr Mahawar."

Victims who took the antibiotics, including those who didn't go through sterilisation, complained of dizziness and vomiting.

An investigation is now under way into why the drugs were bought locally when there was enough stock at the state's central procurement agency.
