The Barbary lion (Panthera leo leo), sometimes referred to as the Atlas lion, is an African lion population that is considered extinct in the wild and is among the biggest lion subspecies. It is believed that the last wild Barbary lion was shot in the western Maghreb during the year 1942 near Tizi n'Tichka.[2]
The Barbary lion was first described by the Austrian zoologist Johann Nepomuk Meyer under the trinomen Felis leo barbaricus on the basis of a type specimen from Barbary.[3]
A lion from Constantine, Algeria is considered the type specimen of the specific name Felis leo used by Linnaeus in 1758
Le Lion de l'Atlas (Panthera leo leo), également appelé Lion de barbarie ou Lion de Nubie, est une sous-espèce de lion, aujourd'hui éteinte à l'état sauvage1. Il régnait autrefois sur toute l'Afrique du Nord. Le dernier spécimen sauvage fut vraisemblablement abattu en 1942 à tiz'n' tichka au Maroc2.
L'ours de l'Atlas et le léopard de Barbarie, les deux autres principaux prédateurs d'Afrique du Nord, sont désormais, respectivement, disparus et près de l'extinction.
الأسد البربري والذي يعرف أيضا بالأسد النوبي وأسد الأطلس هو إحدى سلالات الأسود التي انقرضت في البرية خلال أوائل القرن العشرين، والتي استوطنت شمال إفريقيا. واعتقد لفترة طويلة بأنه انقرض تماما في أوائل 1940 ولم يبق منه أي أفراد حية كمنطقة سوق أهراس والتي تعني سوق الأسود، إلا أن بعض الأسود التي يحتفظ فيها في حدائق الحيوانات والسيركات أظهرت خلال العقود الثلاثة الماضية بعضا من السمات التي جعلتها تعتبر من السلالة البربرية أو مرشحة لتكون كذلك على الأقل. هناك الكثير من الناس والمؤسسات المختلفة التي تزعم حاليا أنها تمتلك أسودا بربريّة، ويظهر أن هناك حوالي أربعين أسدا منها في الأسر في أوروبة بكاملها، ويصل عدد الأفراد منها في جميع أنحاء العالم إلى أقل من مئة
