Kurds worldwide march in solidarity with Kobani

Kurds in Turkey and across the world have taken to the streets to show their solidarity with the besieged Syrian town of Kobani, as Peshmerga fighters and others battle to stop it falling into the hands of ISIL militants.
The failure of Turkey itself to help defend the mainly Kurdish town on its border has sparked riots among Turkish Kurds in which some 40 people died.
But Sebahat Tuncel, a pro-Kurdish Member of Parliament in Turkey, hailed Saturday’s march in Istanbul as calm.
“This is a very peaceful and democratic action platform,” she said.
“People here are defending peace against the violent ISIL organisation which threatens peace in the Middle East. Our stand here is to support peace and brotherhood in the region.”
A demonstrator taking part said: “We are here to support Kurds’ rightful resistance. That is why I came here.”
Germany is home to one of Europe’s largest Kurdish diasporas and thousands marched in Berlin and other cities.
Demonstrators pounded the streets elsewhere, including in Paris, Brussels and London, insisting that Kobani’s fate in the face of ISIL not only concerns the Kurds but the world as a whole.
