Turkey: Miners trapped 300 metres underground

At least 18 workers are trapped underground after an accident at a coal mine in Turkey. Twenty others have been rescued.

An area of the pit in Karaman province was flooded with water while miners were working.

Officials have said their chances of survival are slim unless they had reached a safety gallery.

Rescuers have yet to make contact with the miners who are trapped 300 metres underground.

Turkey’s emergency management agency believes the cause of the accident was a broken pipe in the mine.

Earlier this year Turkey suffered its worst mining disaster when a fire killed 301 workers at a pit in Soma.
