Canadian parliament re-opens with homage to its 'hero'

Sergeant-at-Arms, Kevin Vickers received a hero’s welcome in the Canadian parliament as it reopened on Thursday.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper thanked him for his heroics after downing the gunman who terrorised the city a day earlier.
Before getting back to business, MPs held a moment’s silence in memory of Nathan Cirillo, the soldier who was shot dead at the National War Memorial.
Harper reiterated Canada would not be intimidated by acts of terror. He announced that plans to give the national intelligence agency more surveillance powers would be fast-tracked.
Moments earlier police had arrested a man at gunpoint just steps away from the prime minister as he laid a wreath at the war memorial in honour of the soldier. It was not immediately clear what the man’s intentions were.
Parliament returned to work amid tightened security, and a flag flying at half-mast in recognition of the events which rocked the Canadian capital.
