Oscar Pistorius, a double-amputee athlete from South Africa, has been given a jail sentence of five years for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

On October 12th, Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide, but cleared of murder charges.

His attorneys believe that the athlete will end up spending about 10 months behind bars, and the remaining time will be served under house arrest.

The judge presiding over the case said she took the defendant’s disability into consideration when determining how much time Pistorius would spend in the prison system.

In arriving at her decision, the judge weighed the prosecution’s suggestion for a 10-year term against the defense’s argument that given his physical condition, Pistorius was at a high risk for abuse in what they called a violent prison system.

Reeva Steenkamp’s family appeared to be satisfied with the sentencing and their lawyer expressed that justice had been served.

Other people’s reactions to the length of the incarceration have been considerably less approving.

Since the decision was announced, numerous individuals have aired their disgust over what they consider to be far too light a sentence.

Angry outbursts have occurred on both social media and other outlets.

Pistorius is a six-time medal winning Paralympic athlete.
