Hong Kong police said on Thursday (October 16) the officers suspected of beating a pro-democracy protester had been suspended.

A video of the beating of Ken Tsang Kin-chiu, a social worker and member of the pro-democracy Civic Party in a dark corner in the early morning hours of Wednesday (October 15) has gone viral.

Tsang has said he will take legal action against the officers involved.

Senior superintendent of the Police Public Relations Branch, Kong Man-keung, told journalists in a news conference that the seven officers - two inspectors and five junior police officers - had been suspended.

"It is confirmed that seven police officers took action at scene and arrest the complainant. The seven officers have now been interdicted from duty," Kong said.

He stressed that the police force would be impartial in the investigation of the case.
