Police in Ankara deployed water cannons on Thursday to disperse protesters who gathered to demand more action from the Turkish government against Islamic State militants in neighbouring Syria. Protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails at police who responded with water cannons and tear gas.
Kurds have held massive demonstrations across Turkey in which they accuse Ankara of doing nothing to save the Kurdish town of Kobani – close to Syria’s border with Turkey – from the Islamic State fighters.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Wednesday that 19 people had been killed and 145 injured during pro-Kurd protests in Turkey.
