A 100-year-old tree in Duarte, California recently toppled over onto a townhome complex. Rumors surrounding the tree speculate it was previously used for execution-style hangings in the 1800s.

The tree came down at approximately 2 in the morning, waking residents inside the structure.

A tenant explained, “A couple days ago . . . one of the largest branches fell . . . and the rest of the tree was standing and we kinda guessed that the weight distribution was completely imbalanced, so tonight the entire tree decided to fall.”

Reportedly, townhome occupants alerted city officials of the potential danger, but were told the tree was on privately owned land and out of jurisdiction.

One resident said the sound of the crash was similar to an earthquake. Due to the tree's fall, five residents were forced to stay elsewhere for the night.

Fortunately, no one was injured. A pair of townhome units were marked off, indicating they are unsafe and likely damaged.

It’s not yet known when the tenants will be able to reenter their homes.
