A U.S. marine held in Mexico on weapons charges is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, experts confirmed this week.

Now, the lawyer for Andrew Tahmooressi is seeking his release based on the diagnosis.

"The chances of him achieving rehabilitation in Mexico towards reinsertion back into society are slim to null. The expert went on to recommend that Andrew Tahmooressi receive medical treatment for his illness in the United States."

Tahmooressi, an American veteran of the war in Afghanistan, was arrested in March at the border crossing between San Diego and Tijuana.

He reportedly had 400 rounds of ammunition in his truck when passing through customs.

Despite the diagnosis, his lawyer is not optimistic.
