Cameron meets with troops, new government on unannounced Afghanistan visit

British Prime Minister David Cameron made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan on Friday (October 3) to meet with the new unity government, the first major Western leader to visit since an election crisis was resolved, easing threats of armed conflict.

Cameron's visit comes four days after new Afghan President Ashraf Ghani was sworn into office, after months of political turmoil following a disputed election.

"The real and pressing need is for this new national unity government to bring the country together in a way that can deliver non-corrupt good governance to the whole of Afghanistan and indeed offer a path into taking part in politics to all those who want to give up violence," Cameron said.

Cameron also met with British troops at Camp bastion in Helmand Province.

He hailed his country's mission in Afghanistan as a success which came at a heavy price.
