KARACHI (Dunya News)— Anti polio campaign was thrown into disarray in the absence of security in sensitive areas of Karachi on Monday, Dunya News reported.

The polio teams boycotted the campaign in retaliation against unavailability of security.

A three-day polio campaign which was due to begin on Monday in the high risk areas of Karachi was disrupted. The campaign couldn’t proceed because of lack of security measures and was thrown into complete disarray.

The authorities failed to provide the police force for the security of the polio teams in Gadap and Surjani towns in Karachi. The polio workers were not provided with security facilities.

In several areas of Karachi, polio workers are protesting against unavailability of security and allowances. The three-day anti polio campaign was planned to administer polio drops to about 22 million children as old as five years. The campaign was initiated in high risk areas including Surjani town, Gadap town, Landhi, Baldia town and nearby areas.

Meanwhile, the anti-polio drive has successfully been launched in Punjab. The 3-day polio campaign is expected to provide vaccinations to 17.5 million children in the province of Punjab.

According to Ministry of National Health Services, millions of children across Punjab up to the age of five years will be administered anti polio drops during the campaign.

The health authorities reiterated that the polio campaign is of sheer importance in a country like Pakistan which is at an alarming risk of polio virus.

The polio stalls have been installed at railway stations and bus stops to provide facilities to the passengers. Moreover, all private and government hospitals are also administering polio drops to children.

The health department has formed a team comprising different sub departments of education ministry and lady health workers. These teams have been stationed at schools, airports, bus stops, hospitals and railway stations.
