Russia holds military drills in Arctic Laptev Sea

STORY: Russia's coastal defence units conducted live-fire military drills in the Laptev Sea on Wednesday (September 24).

The exercises saw Russia's North Fleet use ships and military vehicles to stage defence techniques in the scenario of attacks by sea or air on the archipelago of the New Siberian Islands, Russian media reported.

Video of the exercises showed deck guns aboard military ships and anti-aircraft missile launchers open fire repeatedly.

The military drills included Russia's navy practising destruction of launched missiles on the outskirts of the site.

Both Russia and NATO have recently stepped up military manoeuvres since the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine between government forces and pro-Russian separatists in the east of the former Soviet republic.
