Locals honour murdered mountaineer while French Muslims express outrage

Residents of St Martin Vesubie near Nice turned out in their hundreds to honour the memory of Herve Gourdel, one of their own.
The mountaineer’s murder by extremists in Algeria allied to the self-styled Islamic State has led to heightened security in France. Gourdel’s family appealed for “dignity and restraint” to the hushed crowd packed into St. Martin’s picturesque streets.
In Paris one of the leaders of France’s four and a half million Muslims is taking action.
“We must all be united, and gather to oppose these forces contrary to civilisation, to humanity, and alien to our values,” said the Rector of the Great Mosque in Paris Dalilil Boubakir.
Muslims will gather at the Great Mosque in the capital in what community leaders are calling a peaceful display of outrage against the killing. Security will be tight in a highly-charged atmosphere.
