Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko has laid out his plans for social and economic reforms over the next six years.

He hopes they will allow the country to apply for EU membership in 2020.

Poroshenko said the 60 reform packages were vital for the survival of the country. He named the priorities as: fighting corruption, tax reform, business deregulation, the decentralisation and reform of state governance, reforming the judiciary, energy independence and strengthening security and defence.

Although an oligarch himself, Poroshenko said he wanted to dismantle the power held by oligarchs and open up the market.

“Only reforms will give answers to the demands of potential international investors. The alternative is to stay alone with Russia,” Poroshenko said.

The president also aims to set up an anti-corruption bureau along the lines of the FBI in October.

Poroshenko wants to see the package of draft laws ready to be passed by the the new parliament elected at the end of October.
