Multiple rescues of hundreds of migrants between Italy and North Africa

Almost 600 migrants from North Africa have been rescued in various operations by the Italian coastguard and other vessels. 40 other people are reported missing after a small boat disappeared off the coast of Libya. Officials say some 3,000 migrants have died making similar voyages since the start of the year.
