WIKILEAKS RELEASES "WEAPONIZED MALWARE" CUSTOMER LIST
On Monday, WikiLeaks released a list of the governments using surveillance malware, developed by German company Finfisher, to snoop on individuals. Intelligence agencies from across the globe have been using the software to discreetly intercept all manner of online data, including emails and calls made via Skype.
And it’s not just authoritarian regimes using the spyware claims WikiLeaks. The organization has listed Qatar and Bahrain among the “weaponized malware” customer list, but also Belgium and Italy … and some countries like South Africa and the Netherlands have reportedly spent several million euros on software and tools developed by the German company.
And WikiLeaks is providing more than just a simple list of governments that have been spying on web users. It has also made the controversial software available for download so that IT experts can gain a better understanding of the software used and develop tools to protect against it. Although making the software freely available to anyone around the world at the click of a button does present risks of its own, as noted in the release.
