Hundreds feared dead in latest migrant crossing tragedies

The Mediterranean is continuing to take a grizzly toll on migrants desperate to cross it – a boat carrying up to 250 people has sunk whilst trying to reach European shores.

Libyan officials say only 36 people have been saved from the water.

Violence in an often troubled Libya has both increased the numbers crossing and decreased local rescue capabilities.

Most aim for Italy – so far in 2014 more than 100,000 migrants have arrived in the country.

But even as officials take stock of such numbers, another tragedy is unraveling.

Nearly 500 people are feared dead, based on the alleged testimony of two migrants, who say a boat went down near Malta last week.
