A deputy in Denver has received a 90-day suspension for allegedly using martial arts moves on a prisoner. Roberto Roena was caught on camera showing off some taekwondo kicks in the Downtown Detention Center.

His co-workers watched as he demonstrated the moves. An inmate, identified as John Cardenas, was watching Roena and reportedly began taunting him.

Cardenas had been standing in the doorway which leads to the jail cells. Reportedly the inmate said “that isn't a kick" along with another unflattering comment.

Roena approached Cardenas and positioned his hands in a fighting manner. He threw out a few punches in the air and made a side kick in the direction of the prisoner.

Cardenas also punched the air, as Roena continued showing off his moves. Soon the two were involved in a real fight, requiring deputies to intervene.

The scuffle ended when Cardenas pinned his opponent on the ground. The incident occurred in April of 2013, but Roena was suspended in late July of this year.

When an investigation was first launched, Roena reportedly lied about the circumstances and told supervisors Cardenas threw the first punches.

He came clean after the surveillance video surfaced. Roena is a taekwondo instructor and is also a 15-year department veteran.
