Death toll from Kashmir flooding tops 400

Flooding triggered by the heaviest rainfall in 50 years has claimed more than 400 lives in Pakistan and India.

And thousands remain stranded in towns and villages in the disputed border region between the two countries.

Residents have harshly criticised the governments of both countries for not giving them enough warning beforehand, and not doing enough to help them now.

But even as residents take the rescue effort into their own hands -- and their own boats -- Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says his government will spare no effort to help flood victims.

25. (SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) PAKISTANI PRIME MINISTER NAWAZ SHARIF SAYING:

"The government will, God willing, give you total support in rebuilding your houses and settling your problems. We will stand by you and not back off. God willing, we will spend whatever is required, no matter how big the sum."
