Obama tells congressional leaders he can go it alone against ISIL

Ahead of Wednesday evening’s televised speech laying out his plans to combat Islamic State militants (ISIL) President Barack Obama has briefed congressional leaders.
He told them he has the authority to expand US military action but that he welcomes their support
Leading Republican John Boehner and one of Obama’s chief advisories said he awaits more details of Obama’s strategy.
“Rand Corporation ( independent political think tank) came out over the summer and talked about the fact that there are twice as many terrorists involved in terrorist activities today than there were the day the president took office. There’s a serious threat here that has to be dealt with on many levels.”
Meanwhile on the ground in Iraq, Shi’ite militias have been taking on the militants 140 km northwest of Baghdad.
Other international efforts are gaining pace.
French President Francois Hollande is to visit Iraq becoming the first Western leader to go there since the rise of ISIL.
A conference on Iraq’s security crisis is also to be held in Paris on September 15 as a multi-national coalition tries to marshal its response to the insurgents.
