WEB USERS REACT TO THE DEATH OF STEVEN SOTLOFF
Emotions are running high on the web following the release of a new video attributed to the Islamic State terrorist organization purporting to show the beheading of freelance American journalist Steven Sotloff, who was kidnapped in Syria in summer 2013. Web users across the globe have taken to social networks in their droves reacting to his tragic death and paying tribute to the 31 year old news professional.
The #RIPStevenSotloff Twitter hashtag has begun trending with posts hailing his bravery and his sense of duty, and voicing outrage and shock over the jihadist group`s cruelty and savagery. Scores of journalists have also shared messages of condolence for his loved ones. They also remind readers that reporting the news is not a crime, and voice their sorrow that their fellow journalist was abducted and murdered by terrorists when he was just trying to do his job.
And while many are expressing their sadness over the death of Steven Sotloff, some have also paid tribute to him by uploading photos of him at work before his abduction and the Islamic State`s cowardly execution. They say it is important to remember his smile, and urge other web users not to circulate the video of his beheading. There are indeed growing calls for a media blackout and a boycott of what has been described as the sickening and gruesome video, so as not to contribute to Islamic State online propaganda.
