'Estonia will never stand alone' - Obama seeks to reassure Baltic states

President Obama has reaffirmed America’s commitment to Estonia and other Baltic states under its NATO obligations, in response to concerns over possible Russian aggression.

He was speaking alongside his Estonian counterpart in the capital Tallinn ahead of this week’s NATO summit in Wales, described as the most important since the Cold War in the light of events in Ukraine.

The US president said no settlement was possible as long as Russia was sending troops disguised as separatists.

He also said European members of NATO needed to do their fair share of defence spending to bolster the alliance.

Obama paid tribute to the American journalist Steven Sotloff, murdered by Islamist militants.

Confirming that a video of his beheading was authentic, the president said America’s objective was to degrade and destroy ISIL not just in Iraq but in the region.
