Men, women and dogs in kilts, legions of bagpipers and more tartan than one can shake a stick at were all featured at the 41st Virginia Scottish Games and Festival Saturday in The Plains, Virginia.
The festival, usually held on the last weekend of August, draws representatives of almost 20 Scottish-American clans from across the United States. The programme features examples of "traditional" Scottish culture such as bagpipe and drum performances, highland dancing, sheep herding, and traditional athletic competitions.
Some festival-goers expressed their views on the upcoming September 18 Scottish independence vote, saying that a feeling of independence from the United Kingdom exists among many Scots residing in the U.S and elsewhere.
