UN declares Ukrainian death toll, as fighting opens new front

Fighting in eastern Ukraine has already claimed close to 2,600 lives according to the UN, a figure that excludes those killed in Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.

Further civilians have since been added to that list of casualties, with 15 people reportedly killed during heavy shelling in Donetsk on Thursday. Whilst Kyiv says ten more Ukrainian soldiers have lost their lives fending off a separatist counteroffensive.

That advance by pro-Russian rebels has led them deeper into Ukraine’s southern belly, reportedly taking the town of Novoazovsk, before advancing towards Mariupol.

Unchecked, their gains could establish a land corridor between Russian and Crimea.

The role played by Moscow in establishing this new front has now been called into question with satellite imagery allegedly showing Russian artillery and amour inside Ukraine.
