Killer 'Popeye' freed from Colombian prison

Colombian hired killer known as “Popeye”, has been released from prison after serving 22 years of a 30-year sentence.

John Jairo Velasquez who was hit man for drug baron Pablo Escobar confessed to killing 300 people. in the 1980s and 1990s.

He was escorted from the high security prison to begin a probation period of four years.

Valasquez was convicted for killing presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan in 1989 but turned states witness against former Justice Minister Alberto Santofimio who had ordered Galan’s killing.
